Remittance Processing 2006
Solutions and Strategies for Improving
Payment/Remittance Operations
October 2 - 3, 2006
Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center
on Lake Grapevine, Grapevine, Texas
This event was co-located with TAWPI’s Payment Capture & Clearing Council meeting on October 3-4.
Remote deposit capture…image exchange…back office conversion—that was on the agenda when industry practitioners met at TAWPI’s annual Remittance Processing Conference. Two days of informative panels, case studies and interactive discussion provided a comprehensive perspective of alternative payment processing options, how the various products work together for the benefit of the organization and how to better serve customer segments defined by their payments needs.
This year’s conference kept true to its legacy in delivering the latest thinking in remittance and payment processing while offering a new opportunity for interactive discussions among attendees. Facilitated roundtables allowed practitioners to share ideas, strategies and techniques for deploying remote capture strategies, managing workflow and implementing item imaging solutions.

Maximizing the Potential of Remote
Check Electronification
John Cliff, Product Management, JPMorgan Chase
Given that businesses will continue to receive check payments over the
next decade, there is a great opportunity to improve not only operational
efficiency, but also working capital management through remote check
conversion and truncation. Presenters in this session discussed economic
factors driving companies to adoption, including the rationale for the
co-existence of conversion and truncation, and best practices in implementation
procedures.

Business Case for Outsourcing Data Entry
Michael Manna, Major Accounts Sales Manager, Orbograph
Image capture systems are now considered the technology of choice in the remittance and document processing industry. A benefit of this image-enabled environment is the ability to send images, or even pieces of images called snippets, to any location in the world for post OCR/ICR processing. It is no surprise that remote data entry is often the first function organizations look to outsource. Early in the adoption cycle cost savings was the primary driver in the decision to outsource data entry. But, a mature business case now includes other factors such as processing windows, quality improvement and even contingency planning and disaster recovery.
The Value of Lockbox in the World of Technology
Michael Reynolds, Senior Vice President, Data Management Products
This presentation focused on the increasing emphasis and importance
of accelerated delivery of A/R information. Supply Chain Management
and Revenue Cycle Management processes are more dependent than
ever on accurate and timely data especially exception payment conditions.
Invoice and document capture, notification/resolution of payment
exceptions (decisioning) and on-line/web access are the expectations
of A/R and
Cash Management professionals. Are you ready for this
challenge?

Beyond Remittance Processing:
How to Expand In-House Operations to Become a Profit Center
for your Company
Neil Snowdon, Product Management, BancTec
In an environment of decreasing paper payments, many companies
are considering whether to outsource remittance processing. But
there is another option: expanding in-house operations to create
a one-stop provider of document processing within the organization.
Based on a real world case study, this session discussed the
five-step process of determining whether this solution is right
for you, and how to implement it. Attendees learned how to:
- Identify potential document
processing applications to bring in-house.
- Conduct a cost analysis to determine
the benefits of in-house document processing vs. alternatives.
- Gain buy-in
from senior management on expanding in-house document processing capabilities.
The
Direction of Corporate Payments
Bob Murphy, Senior Vice President, VICOR
While a vast array of quantitative consumer and
business payments
data and research currently is
available, a consolidated view of corporate payments
is not. This session reviewed top-level findings
from VICOR's new Corporate Payment Progress
Index (CPPI), providing one of the first
glimpses at the overall progression of corporate payments.
The data is derived from hundreds of responses from prominent
corporate payment professionals to a questionnaire administered by Celent, LLC.
Using a sophisticated model that
incorporates four major business factors – payment method used (current
and anticipated share), cost per transaction, investments in payment systems,
and satisfaction with payment system performance – the results show a single
index that measure the efficiency
and progress of the industry as a whole.

Facilitator: Steve McNair, President, RKG
Beginning March 16, 2007 many retailers and billers will be allowed to convert eligible checks to ACH debits in the back-office. Known as back-office conversion, or BOC, the new rules will enable financial institutions to provide additional value to their customers in a business environment where many checks are still used. Back-office conversion will also allow financial institutions to convert eligible checks received in image files to ACH debits. This interactive session explored the rules of the BOC application, potential BOC workflows and the benefits and challenges of implementing it in your operation.
USPS Remittance Mail Initiatives
Robert Craig, Senior VP of Business Development, First Data/REMITCO
Susan Dudley, Product Management, US Postal Service

Image-to-ACH Conversion: The Benefits and Drawbacks of
Clearing Check Images via the ACH Network
(Open to all conference attendees and PCC members.
Conference adjourns at 2:30)
Danne Buchanan, CEO, NetDeposit
Paul R. Obermeyer, Executive VP, Operations Svc. Group, Comerica Bank
Several major banking companies are discussing testing an electronic check-clearing system that would combine imaging technology and the automated clearing house network. Linking the two payment networks would let banks that have invested in imaging systems convert check images into ACH files to be sent to those that have not. The concept is still in the very early stages, and there are significant technical and legal barriers to merging the two systems, such as how to notify consumers and how to make archived check images available on demand to paying banks. This session explored the pros and cons of merging the ACH and image systems.
