Descriptions of the TAWPI ICP Certification Test Dimensions
The ICP Candidate will be tested on a body of knowledge which has been broken down into seven dimensions as described below. While the ICP Handbook provides a broad range of information, test questions will be taken from other sources as well. The topics listed beneath each dimension title are covered in varying degrees of depth in the Handbook.

1. Capture
Capture processes cover a broad range of technologies. Data capture, imaging, image capture, document capture and information capture all indicate specific functions with their own individual tools and terminology. This section reviews the steps in the capture process, from mail handling to document preparation, data entry and exception processing to automated capture. This area includes the following aspects:
- Mail processing
- Scanning
- Image quality
- Keying & manual data entry
- Recognition technologies
- Verification, correction and validation
2. Payments & Remittance Processing
This area covers aspects of payment and remittance processing form processing – both paper and electronic. This area includes the following aspects:
- Common workflows in remittance processing (retail, wholesale, wholetail)
- Steps in the remittance process
- Mail room operations (i.e., opening, extracting, and sorting different types of mail)
- Preparing payment documents for data capture/deposit
- Recognition technologies concerned primarily with remittance processing (MICR, CAR, LAR)
- ARC, Image Exchange, ACH & Check 21
- Float
- Best Practices
3. Forms Processing
This section will help the candidate understand when forms processing makes sense, what limitations the technologies have, and how forms processing integrates with document management systems as well as eventual storage and retrieval. It introduces the individual to the importance of forms design and completion to success. The topics include:
- Types of forms
- Forms design
- Forms processing software
- e-forms and Internet forms
4. Tools & Technology
This area includes descriptions and explanations of technical aspects of the software and hardware used for information capture. In particular, it describes the technology behind image capturing and recognition utilized for data capture and remittance processing. Some of the topics listed (such as barcodes) are also covered in other areas; however, the Technology Area focuses on the technological principles and mechanisms associated with each topic. The topics include:
- Capture hardware
- Recognition technologies (handwriting and hand printing, barcodes, OMR)
- Workflow
- Databases
5. Document & Records Management
The volume of information being stored continues to surge and the corresponding storage management issues have made archiving and accessing data an increasingly complex function. This area cover the following topics:
- Storage media
- Electronic document management systems
- Indexing and storage
6. Management Issues
Industry professionals face all the same management challenges of other industries, with a need for specialized expertise in the areas of ergononics, safety and assorted document legislation. This area includes the following aspects:
- Human resources
- Training
- Ergonomics
- Project management
- Resource planning

7. Legal & Regulatory Issues
Depending on the nature of the documents or information being handled, various state, local and federal laws govern processor’s work. This area covers these topics:
- ARC
