Update on Check 21, Electronic Payments and Beyond

TAWPI revisited the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston to learn about the latest progress in electronic payments and deposits (Check 21 & non-Check 21), ATM technologies, ARC, and new back office applications. 

In addition, representatives from Citizen’s Bank and bank services provider COCC informed us about the new customer services they will be offering as the Fed broadens it support of check imaging and other electronic bank services. 

Speaker Bios:

Michael Stewart, Senior Account Executive and Check 21 Product Specialist, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston
Over the course of the past five years he has held various positions in the Bank's Public and Community Affairs Department, the Federal Reserve Banks' Retail Payments Office and Business Development and Customer Services.  Currently, he works with clients providing technical sales support and serves as a consultant on Check 21 product strategy and implementation. 

Elizabeth M. Lindstrom, Vice President, Citizens Bank
Currently, Elizabeth "Libby" Lindstrom is the Remote Deposit Service Product Manager at Citizens Bank.  She began her banking career at BayBank in 1991.  Prior to joining Citizens Bank and Charter One, she most recently was the Director of Cash Management at Commerce Bank & Trust where she led the Bank's Image Exchange initiatives which included rolling out their Remote Deposit Service.

Joseph D. Lockwood, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, COCC
Mr. Lockwood is responsible for the quality of COCC's technical operating environment as well as the company's technology plans. Drawing upon his deep knowledge of networks, information security, operations management, and bank technology, he managed COCC's migration from a legacy mainframe system to the company's current client/server open platform. Mr. Lockwood speaks frequently to trade associations about technology issues and how financial institutions can best manage them.

Datamatics hosted the November 16 New England Chapter meeting.  The meeting started with the New England chapter business meeting.  A business and treasurers report was read followed by elections. 

A proposed slate was presented and Susan asked for any additions.  There being none, the slate was approved, seconded and unanimously passed by the members present.  The new officers for the New England Chapter, serving a two year term beginning January 1st, 2006 are:

Following the elections Vishal Bhavsar from Datamatics gave a presentation focusing on Business Process Outsourcing / IT Enabled services, Back Office Processing Services, Data and Content Management, - Software development / practice activities, Document Management & workflow, Data Warehousing & Business Intelligence and Data Migration.  He then led us on a tour of Datamatics facilities.

After lunch, Mr. Roni Boker, Orbograph reviewed key trends in the field of remote data entry, “off-shoring,” data security, and advances in related key technologies.

Lastly, Ray Graber from Graber & Associates gave an interesting presentation on "Outsourcing - Who Needs it, Who wants it?".  Download presentation.

Implementing Image Exchange

Chapter meeting was held at COCC in Avon, Connecticut.  

What is it like to actually run an end-to-end image process, from teller line to customer statement? COCC, the largest check image processor in Connecticut, described the full image process in a live production environment, and presented practical solutions to the real world issues of image quality, balancing, branch workflow implications, and substitute checks. 

Attendees also heard from George Santos from Kodak.  George facilitated a look at the big picture of distributed document image capture with illustrations from the distributed check imaging application. The agenda covered (a) Distributed Image Capture Business Drivers (b) Distributed Capture Challenges, (c) Technology Enablers and Innovation, (d) Partner selection considerations, and (e) Kodak credentials and New Check Scanning Solutions Overview.

Next, Jim McNealy and Michael Stewart from the Federal Reserve presented an enlightening look at the state of the industry in terms of Check 21 and ARC.

In addition to this enlightening presentation, this meeting included a site tour at COCC, a short business meeting and a networking lunch.

Betsy Didan is responsible for COCC entire check processing operation, including daily processing of 400,000 items, implementation of the company’s image exchange services, and development of new image processing services going forward. Ms. Didan brings 31 years of experience with check processing, cash management operations, and wholesale lockbox at some of the largest institutions in New England.

 

George Santos

George joined Kodak in July 2005 and is responsible for launching Kodak's Check Imaging Solutions.  Previously, George was a Senior Sales Executive for Unisys in their remittance solutions and outsourcing group.  During his 6 years at Unisys, he played a vital role in launching Unisys' Remittance Process Outsourcing business.  Prior to Unisys, he worked with AT&T for over 15 years in a variety of sales and marketing roles.
